First frost hits the Northeast and Midwest between mid-October and early November. If your BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, or Mercedes-Benz hasn't been prepped, cold temperatures will find every compromised component. Here is the four-area checklist every European owner should run through now.

01 — BATTERY

European ECUs Are Hard on Batteries. Cold Makes It Worse.

BMW F/G-series and Audi B9 platforms run multiple control modules 24/7, even with the ignition off. A battery at 70% capacity that handles summer fine can fail to start a cold engine. These platforms require AGM batteries — standard flooded cells won't hold up. If your battery is over three years old, get it load-tested before October.

02 — WIPER BLADES

Yours Are Probably Older Than You Think.

OEM wiper blades degrade after 12–18 months. BMW and Audi use beam-style wiper arms that require beam blades — fitting the wrong style reduces clearing performance across the curved glass. Look for a cold-rated rubber compound, aerodynamic profile, and correct arm fitment for your model.

03 — BRAKES

Wet Roads Reduce Stopping Distance. Worn Pads Make It Worse.

Cold, wet roads cut braking grip by 30–40%. Pads under 4mm are a problem. Porsche Cayenne/911/Macan rotors warp when pads glaze. BMW M3/M4 pads wear faster under daily use. Audi A4/S4 rear calipers seize when not serviced before winter. Don't overlook brake fluid — flush it every two years as absorbed moisture lowers its boiling point.

04 — SUSPENSION

Worn Dampers Hurt Handling on Slick Roads.
